The industry has now left behind earlier fears that a big harvest could trigger a repeat of the crisis of 1999 when world sugar prices collapsed subordinate to the weight of Brazilian exports of 124 million tonnes.
The convolutions of cane coming in from the Centre/South region have indeed been sizeable, and total forecast sugar exports of 100-115mt in 2002/03
